Located in the heart of downtown Waukesha, The Steaming Cup has been open for business since 2004, but has been owned by Tofte’s Table owners Cristina and Jason Tofte since 2015. Any fans of The Steaming Cup in the pre-Tofte days will be happy to know that the charm and flair that this establishment is known for still lives on!
This cafe features multiple seating areas up front with two back rooms for additional seating. This historic Nickell building is a beautiful lannon stone structure with an eclectic vibe inside. You’ll be sure to find a place to sit, even when it’s busy. If you’re looking to study alone, there are a lot of places to plug in a computer or charger including a long work station bar with individual plug-ins. Mostly you’ll find tables for two or four persons. There are spaces that allow for more quiet conversation as well. Also a huge bonus are the great windows, which not only provide natural light but also give you generous views of beautiful downtown Waukesha.

Today they were serving dark roast Sumatra, light roast Guatemala, flavored Frosted Cinnamon Bun, and Decaf Mexico. They brew Up Coffee out of Minneapolis, and use their Matador Espresso blend for espresso-based drinks. In addition to their espresso and drip coffees, they also serve tea, Italian soda, smoothies, Nitro brew and cold brew. Here are some of the drinks we tried today:

Iced Caramel Latte: While not technically on the menu, they were able to make this for us! This iced drink was sweet and refreshing, but not terribly espresso-flavored. If you are one to order a drink for it’s caramely sweetness instead of it’s heavy coffee flavor, this is a perfect choice for you. Also a suggestion: try one of their elaborate frappes, which we totally regret not ordering!

White Peppermint Mocha: This was very sweet and would’ve preferred less syrup. The peppermint was not very noticeable and was more of an essence than a strong presence. If ordering this we would recommend asking for less syrup and an extra shot of espresso to provide a better balance.

Cinnsational Revolver: This drink might be a little scary for a coffee rookie. Sporting 6 shots of espresso, cinnamon and caramel, this drink was something different. The espresso was rather tame, especially for the amount in it. The caramel was more potent the closer you got to the end which made it sweeter. The cinnamon was very light, and didn’t add too much to the overall taste. If you want a sugary drink that will keep you awake for the week to come, grab this! Perfect for a student taking on finals week.

Turtle Latte: You don’t order a Turtle drink if you’re not expecting chocolate and caramel syrup to be involved! This was like a combination of a warm candy bar in a cup, mixed with espresso. Again, maybe it’s the coffee bean itself, but it’s not a heavily espresso-flavored drink. This definitely will satisfy both your sweet tooth and your caffeine fix in one.

Rocket Fuel: This drink has four shots of sugared espresso with steamed half and half. We could definitely taste the hint of sugar found in the espresso, but with four shots we expected espresso to be overwhelming and it wasn’t.

The bakery items are all sourced from right down the road at Tofte’s Table, aside from the gluten-free options. Not only do they serve bakery items, but there are plenty of delicious soups, sandwiches and salads to choose from as well.

White Bean Chicken Chili: Absolutely delicious! We would definitely get this chili again and would highly recommend to any soup-lover! There was a slight heat in this chili but never to the point where we would call it spicy. It was a perfectly balanced soup that warms you up on these cold days!

Breakfast Sammy: This was a delightful sandwich! It had egg, cheese, tomato, onion, mayo, and red pepper. You also have an option of bacon, ham, turkey, or roast beef. The proportions were excellent, and the toasted sourdough was a perfect bread choice for this sandwich. It also came with a fruit cup – we love the additional healthy touch! This is a perfect sandwich to start your day with.

Blueberry Muffin: We ordered this one warmed up, which definitely was the right call. It was very moist but didn’t have a strong blueberry flavor to it. The blueberries were dehydrated and all at the bottom off the muffin which was a little sad. Not our favorite muffin of all time, but would go really well with a cup of coffee.

Jam Beignet: This cute little donut was generously stuffed with fruit jam and was very soft. It was served cold though and we definitely think that if it had been served room temperature it would have been even more delicious.

Cinnamon Roll: Surprisingly moist and served with a generous amount of frosting, this sweet treat is the perfect companion to a cup of hot coffee.
