**UPDATE: Sven’s European Cafe has closed its doors in the summer of 2019.
Sven’s Cafe is a quaint little German coffee shop with a lot of history and heart behind it. Owner (and Germany native) Steve Goretzko started roasting coffee in 1989 when he partnered with George Voglis in West Allis, WI, giving special attention to fair trade and organic coffees – reportedly the first ones to do so in Wisconsin.

Inside, you’ll find a cozy feel with traditional European flare and a local vibe. Fireplace? Check. Eclectic artwork? Check. Friendly locals who visit Sven’s so often that the baristas have their orders memorized? Check.

Sven’s roasts their own beans, and sells them by the pound at the cafe, alongside a selection of honeys and syrups.

We will tell you that the food menu is quite large, both for breakfast and lunch. Today we focused in on the bakery and beverage menus, and found it hard to choose what to try! (If you’re wondering, the tea they serve is Rishi)

Latte Miel – The aroma of cinnamon on this Latte Miel was mouth-watering! The espresso taste in this drink was light, but was accented with a lovely honey presence thanks to Breitsamer Honig honey company.

Caramel Latte – The caramel was noticeable, but not overly sweet in this well-prepared latte. Overall smooth taste, which is critical for this go-to flavored latte.

Gingerbread Latte – This latte had quite a unique taste! The gingerbread came through very well in the drink but it wasn’t as sweet as anticipated. This drink was quite yummy with the morning bun and I bet it would pair nicely with a different treat as well!

We had the pleasure of meeting patrons Whitney and Nicole during this visit. They are frequent visitors of Sven’s Cafe, and told us that they’ve been longtime customers. They assured us that if we like the coffee, we’d LOVE the food!

Yogurt, Granola, and Fruit – We got exactly what I expected when they brought this out! A delicious yogurt topped with granola surrounded with a variety of fruit. We also liked that they took the time to organize the fruit in sections and didn’t just mix it all together. If you want a light, delicious, yet filling breakfast, this is the perfect choice!

Black Bottom Cupcake – Chocolatey and so moist, this desert was definitely a treat! The chocolate chip cheesecake filling was generous and paired well with the chocolate cupcake it was hugged in. Rich enough to share, but you probably won’t want to.

Apple Kringle – This was a very dense Kringle loaded down with apples. Honestly, being ‘the more fruit the better’ kind of people, we also appreciated that the tartness of the apples balanced out the sweetness of the pastry and its frosting. Once again the portion was very generous.

Morning Bun – This is on our list of best morning buns! It wasn’t flaky and crispy like some we’ve tasted; it was a doughy, soft, warm, cinnamon bun. Warming it up was a smart choice as the inside swirl got soft and melty. We also loved the size of this morning bun as it was plenty big enough to share!

Completely worth mentioning is that Sven’s offers generous portions for a very reasonable price, so it’s easy to add a bakery item (or two!) onto a coffee order without breaking the bank. Air high five.

Next time you’re in the Bay View area of Milwaukee and looking for a new coffee experience (or mealtime satisfaction), try out Sven’s Cafe! We’d love to hear your thoughts.
