THE BUZZ – KENOSHA

Located in historic Downtown Kenosha on 6th Avenue, just three blocks from the Metra station, The Buzz Cafe is the bees-knees when it comes to getting a good cup of coffee.

With the cafe’s wood and cream brick accents and vintage ceiling tiles, this place balances a cozy vibe with rustic elements. The only natural light comes from a window or two in the back of the cafe and the storefront window at the entrance, making this establishment feel a little bit more “bar-like” than coffee shop.  Good thing though, because half of this place is dedicated to high-quality craft beers and wine.

We were quite excited to hear that they brew Pilcrow Coffee, one of our favorite Milwaukee roasters.  Eager to see if they could do Pilcrow proud, we ordered up!

Honey Bee Latte – Judging by name only, we assumed this would probably be one of The Buzz’s signature drinks, so we gave it a try.  The strong honey presence was at the forefront of this latte, combining with Pilcrow’s Storyteller blend espresso to create a “Honey Nut Cheerios” type of flavor. Unless you really don’t like any additional sweetener in your latte, we think this would probably be a winner with anyone who orders this.

Sleigh Ride Mint Tea Latte – Trying to ride out the tail end of the winter holiday menu items, we tried this Sleigh Ride Mint Tea Latte.  Surprisingly, there was almost no sweetness to the latte, but the tea flavor was very prominent and not offensive at all.  The mint was subtle, and we were expecting a candy cane flavor but again we were surprised that it was very tea-like and delicate. Giving points for creativity, we can’t wait to see what they’ll come up for winter drinks next year!

Caramel Latte – After one sip we immediately recognized the Pilcrow espresso. The combination of great beans and a trained barista often makes for a smooth, consistent, tasty drink. The caramel is present, but not overpowering.

Iced Coffee – This iced coffee was a fantastic basic iced coffee. Because of it’s simple chocolatey taste, it could be sipped on black or with cream and sugar. We added a dash of half and half and one packet of sugar in the raw. It was thoroughly enjoyed and didn’t last long.

Maple cardamom cortado –
The maple cardamom cortado came as a 6 ounce drink instead of it’s traditional size of 4 ounces. At first we were startled that there were chunks of cardamom in the cortado. Initially, it wasn’t a pleasant surprise since we didn’t know what it was.  After realizing it was freshly ground cardamom we fell in love with the drink. The maple was somewhat hidden behind the powerful cardamom spice, but the cortado was simply sweet and well balanced.

Beyond the coffee menu, we tried some of the bakery and food items that The Buzz sources from bakeries in the community.

Apple and cherry pie – Petite and kid-friendly, this will be a hit for the whole family.  The crust is soft and the filling is a flavorful. You have the option of having these warmed up, which we highly recommend.

Bacon and Egg Bagel – This sandwich consists of bacon, egg, Colby Jack cheese, and avocado spread on a sesame bagel.  This sandwich did not last long. The bacon was generous and the bagel was soft and moist.  This would go well with an iced coffee, and be a very filling breakfast.

Cali Baja wrap – This wrap is made up of
maple turkey, bacon, egg, avocado, swiss cheese, and Sriracha aioli on a flour tortilla. We appreciated that there was a good balance of every ingredient on the list.  It tasted fresh and was difficult for one person to finish!

Yogurt – A very nicely presented serving of yogurt, granola and fruit. One word of caution, it comes with currently available fruit. Today it was made with freshly sliced apples. The yogurt wasn’t overly sweet, so the crunchy granola complemented it nicely, as did the sweetness of the apples.

Like most coffee shops, you can buy the gear here, in an appropriate bee-themed black and bright yellow.  Pilcrow Coffee is also available for purchase by the bag.
