This familiar space has a new face! Roots Coffeebar & Cafe in historic downtown Waukesha is now under new ownership and a new name – Mountain Top Coffee. While still serving Anodyne Coffee and offering breakfast and lunch options, Mountain Top Coffee presents customers some new and creative options.

With two indoor spaces and a rather sizable outdoor patio, it won’t be hard to find a seat here for either a large group or a solo study sesh.

Live music lovers (or fans of window seating) will be excited to learn that there’s still a small stage here, so hopefully this means a potential of live music in the future? This brings back memories of some of us performing on this very stage in the past. Ahhh, nostalgia!

It’s no secret that we love Anodyne’s coffee. Today’s drip coffee was Round River blend produced from Central America using the washed method. Their espresso was Anodyne’s Mind Tonic, which we are quite familiar with!
Something that caught our eye before stepping foot into this coffee shop was their creativity. Mountain Top Coffee’s social media highlights drinks such as the Oatmeal Cream Pie Latte, Blackberry Mocha, and Crystal Ball Matcha. We’re digging the innovation!

Shark Bite – Comprised of italian soda with blue curaçao and cherry, this was a very creative and delightful drink. We expected this to taste a little on the sugary side but we were pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t super sweet, allowing the flavors to shine through on this summer chiller.

Honey Iced Latte – This not-too-sweet iced latte was light tasting in both the honey and espresso departments, but refreshing and paired great with a sweet treat.

Cortado – We normally love a strong shot of Anodyne’s Mind Tonic espresso combined with equal steamed milk, but this one was maybe pulled with too fine a grind, since it tasted quite toasty.

The food menu covers all of the cafe bases, with breakfast, sandwiches, salads, soups, and bakery items. No major sourcing here; the food is all made in-house.

Avocado Toast – This is your classic toast with fresh avocado spread and a pair of orange slices. Nice for a light breakfast when you don’t want to down some coffee on an empty stomach, or when you order this in combination of a bakery item!

Cinnamon Roll – This roll is quite large, and is smothered in cream cheese frosting with a hint of cinnamon. While on the drier side as far as cinnamon rolls go, this should be easily remedied with pairing of a good ‘ol a cup of joe.

Breakfast Sandwich – This egg, cheese, and avocado on an everything bagel is tasty and filling.

Chocolate Cake – A chocolate lover’s dream, this is a generous piece of very moist, chocolatey cake. The cream cheese frosting was delicious and although this was big enough to share, you might want to keep this all to yourself.

Banana Bar – Although we were excited about the thick layer of frosting and banana-ey goodness, this banana bar wasn’t mixed properly, and therefore didn’t bake evenly. We’re guessing this is just a fluke, and tomorrow’s banana bars will be top notch!

There are plenty of options (both familiar and new) to choose from at Mountain Top Coffee, so stop by sometime and see what’s brewing.
